(ISBN: 0061537934, $23.95)

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life’s ordeals.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life… as only a dog could tell it.

Redemption is the story of animal sheltering in the United States, a movement that was born of compassion and then lost its way. It’s the story of the “no kill” movement, which says we can and must stop the killing. It’s about heroes and villains, betrayal and redemption. And it’s about a social movement as noble and just as those that have come before. Most of all, it’s a story about believing in the community and trusting in the power of compassion.

(Harper, 304 pp, $13.95)

Jacqueline Sheehan bases her fictional novel from experiences of her own life, although, none of the occurrences are actual happenings. From the start, Lost and Found brings a sense of suspense, intense mystery, wisdom, friendship, devotion and psychological features. After losing her husband at a young age, Rocky, a psychologist, is lost within her own self and tries to escape her pain and the rest of the world, that is, until she meets Lloyd, a black Labrador Retriever. While on the island Rocky decides to take on a sort of new identity and takes on a temporary job as the island’s dog warden, or animal control officer, so to speak. Rocky finds Lloyd on her get way island with an arrow stuck in his side. Amazing he was still alive, Rocky takes responsibility of Lloyd, and later finds the real mystery behind his heartbreaking story. Rocky eventually finds herself enlightened by the path that led her to Lloyd and the courage she never thought she had in finding the real truths of his past. Readers will learn that pain and loss can be revived with joy when they least expect it. Lost and Found is an enjoyable read for all animal lovers, as well as for those in times of grief.
