The Canine Heritage Breed Test Reveals All

A new DNA test can now determine your mutt’s breed composition and is exciting animal experts who are hopeful that the science behind it could lead to better medical outcomes for your dog.

The new Canine Heritage Breed Test costs $65 and only requires a cheek swab. The test can determine up to five mixes of 38 popular dog breeds.

The DNA sequence of domestic dogs can potentially be used by researchers in the developing field of veterinary forensics and also for prosecuting animal cruelty cases. This test can give insight to owners about their dog’s personality and behavior, which consequently, can affect training.

The current list of breeds available for testing represents about 75 percent of AKC breed regulations. The next round of tests will include another 100 breeds and will also come with a higher price tag.

The test can help owners of “designer” dogs determine if their Cockapoo is genuinely part Poodle and may also elucidate breeders who sell fraudulent Labradoodles. Determining a dog’s breed composition also has practical advantages, such as helping veterinarians to better manage health care.

Test kits can be purchased at MMI Genomics. Results are available in about four to six weeks.
